While much of the nation was still celebrating England’s place in the World Cup semi-finals and settling down for the Wimbledon Men’s Final, something equally special was unfolding in Kingswinford.
On Sunday 12th July, Jill Gray opened her spectacular private garden, welcoming more than 100 visitors for a charity open day that raised over £1000 for Beth’s Sunflowers.
Created with her late husband, Gary, Jill’s garden is a remarkable labour of love. Designed to provide year-round colour, fragrance and tranquillity, it was at its summer best, with vibrant rows of begonias, overflowing hanging baskets, cascading geraniums and striking agapanthus all in magnificent bloom. Every corner offered visitors a picture-perfect display and a peaceful place to pause and reflect.
By opening her cherished garden to the public, Jill helped raise vital funds that will enable Beth’s Sunflowers to continue supporting people affected by blood cancer through private counselling, respite breaks, group support and ongoing research into the disease.
The event proved to be a tremendous success, attracting visitors from across the area who enjoyed delicious afternoon teas, homemade cakes, refreshments and a popular plant sale. Generous donations throughout the day helped push the fundraising total beyond £1,400.
Behind the scenes, an army of volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure everything ran smoothly. Members of Beth’s Sunflowers team, including Andrea Childs, Andrea Nicholls, Justine Hand, Rachel Potter and Georgie Bock, were joined by the Gray family, including Jill, Emily, Dan, Lisa and Micky T, along with volunteer washer-uppers and many others who generously gave their time throughout the day.
The charity also received incredible support from local businesses. Jack Moody Nursery at Hollybush, Cannock, and Prestwood Cave Nursery in Kingswinford donated an impressive selection of plants for the sale. Tesco Stream Road, Kingswinford, Morrisons Kingswinford, The Little Bake Shed, Busy B’s Treats, Newey’s Butchers Kingswinford and The Village Bakery in Wall Heath, together with friends and family, generously donated the food and ingredients that made the afternoon teas such a highlight.
Visitors were unanimous in their praise—not only for the breathtaking beauty of the garden, but also for the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Many spent hours relaxing in the shaded seating areas with tea, cake or a glass of fizz, soaking up the peaceful surroundings and enjoying a true community occasion.
It was far more than an open garden. It was a celebration of community spirit, generosity and remembrance, proving that when people come together for a worthy cause, something truly extraordinary can bloom.
