Sunflower season has officially arrived at the Park Tavern on Cot Lane, Kingswinford, and the much-loved annual Sunflower Growing Competition is once again bringing plenty of colour, friendly competition and community spirit.
With 40 sunflower entries already growing strong, competitors are now nurturing their plants in the hope of claiming one of this year’s coveted titles.
Categories to watch
This year’s competition features four exciting award categories:
- Tallest sunflower
- Widest sunflower head
- Most individual blooms on a single sunflower
- Best decorated pot
Whether you’re aiming to grow a towering giant or showcasing your artistic flair with a beautifully decorated pot, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Friendly competition with plenty of fun
The Park Tavern Sunflower Competition has become a firm favourite in the local community, with competitors doing everything they can to help their sunflowers thrive. From carefully watering each day to experimenting with gardening tips and techniques, everyone is hoping their sunflower will stand above the rest.
Keeping a watchful eye over the competition is landlady Bea Lane, who ensures every sunflower receives plenty of care while making sure the competition remains fair and fun throughout the growing season.
A place on the winners’ board
As well as taking home the prizes, this year’s winners will earn the ultimate honour by having their names added to the Park Tavern Sunflower Winners Board of Fame, joining previous champions in this growing tradition.

Entry costs just £10. Simply bring your most creatively decorated flower pot to the Park Tavern and we’ll provide the sunflower plant and compost. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or trying your hand for the first time, everyone is welcome to get involved. Let the growing games begin!
